A Guide to Moving to Australia as an International GP – What You Need to Know

A Guide to Moving to Australia as an International GP – What You Need to Know

Published By Api , 1 month ago

Australia continues to be one of the most sought-after destinations for international General Practitioners. With its strong healthcare system, lifestyle appeal, and ongoing workforce demand, more doctors than ever are exploring the move.

From our experience working with overseas-trained GPs, the process can feel complex at first but when broken down, the pathway is clearer than it seems.

Two Main Pathways to Australia

International GPs typically enter Australia through one of two migration routes:

1. General Skilled Migration (Points-Based)

This pathway is designed for doctors who meet specific criteria such as:

  • Age
  • English proficiency
  • Qualifications and experience

Common visa options include:

  • Skilled Independent (subclass 189)
  • Skilled Nominated (subclass 190)
  • Skilled Work Regional (subclass 491)

Applicants must meet a minimum points threshold (usually 65+) and submit an Expression of Interest before being invited to apply.

👉 In practice: This route offers independence but can be more competitive and time-consuming.

2. Employer-Sponsored Pathway

This is often the most practical and fastest route for many GPs.

Employers (clinics or health services) sponsor doctors through visas such as:

  • Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482)
  • Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186)
  • Regional Sponsored Migration pathways

👉 In reality:

Having a job offer significantly improves your chances of securing a visa and starting work sooner.

Temporary vs Permanent Residency

  • Some visas (189, 190) offer direct permanent residency
  • Others (482, 491) are temporary pathways, typically leading to PR after a few years of work in Australia

👉 This is why many GPs initially enter on a sponsored visa, then transition to permanent residency once established.

Moving with Family

Australia’s migration system is designed to support relocation:

  • Partners and dependent children can usually be included in visa applications
  • This makes long-term relocation more viable for families

Costs and Considerations

Visa costs vary depending on the pathway, with:

  • Skilled migration visas costing several thousand dollars
  • Additional fees for family members

While the process requires investment, many GPs see this as a long-term career and lifestyle decision.

What Strengthens Your Application

From both the RACGP guidance and our recruitment experience, the strongest candidates typically have:

  • ✔️ Recognised medical qualifications (via the Australian Medical Council)
  • ✔️ Strong English language proficiency
  • ✔️ Relevant GP experience
  • ✔️ A job offer (where possible)
  • ✔️ Clear understanding of the Australian healthcare system

👉 The more aligned you are with workforce needs particularly in regional areas the smoother the process becomes.

The Reality: It’s a Structured but Achievable Process

One of the biggest challenges for international GPs is navigating:

  • Registration requirements
  • Visa pathways
  • Job selection
  • Relocation logistics

The process can feel overwhelming, especially with multiple steps and regulatory bodies involved. However, with the right guidance and planning, it is highly achievable—and increasingly common.

In fact, a significant proportion of Australia’s medical workforce is made up of internationally trained doctors, reflecting how essential this pathway has become.

How We Help GPs Make the Move

From our experience, success comes down to having the right support at the right time.

We work closely with international GPs to:

  • Identify the most suitable visa and registration pathway
  • Connect them with compliant, high-quality practices
  • Align opportunities with lifestyle and career goals
  • Support them through each stage of the relocation journey

Rather than navigating this alone, having a clear roadmap can make the process significantly smoother and faster.
