A Record Number of Flu Vaccines Released by Federal Government

This 2019 Australia recorded two-thirds the figure of lab-confirmed flu cases were reported last year together with the number of deaths.

Professional have forecasted 4,000 deaths from flu in Australia this year.  

The Federal Government released the record figures of flu vaccines that will deliver throughout the country this year, with 11.4 million already issued end of April. 

It includes more than 7.4 million doses for the National Immunisation Program and state and territory government schemes with 3.8 million doses of improved vaccines for aged 65 years and above.  

 Immunisation is the most efficient way to protect people and the whole community from influenza as virus changes every year.   Peak influenza season in parts of Australia happens between June and September. 

Eligible people for a free flu vaccine through the NIP include:

  • pregnant women
  • people aged 65 years and above
  • people with particular medical conditions that may be at risk of severe influenza who are aged 6 months and above
  • people aged 6 months and older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.
