World Physiotherapy Day is on September 8, 2020 to recognise the contribution of physiotherapists in the community. The theme for this year is focused on rehabilitation from respiratory illness, an important point to begin with in highlighting the role of physiotherapists on such matters.
COVID-19 survivors who suffer from severe respiratory conditions will endure a 20 to 30 per cent reduction in lung function. This is due to the damaged air sacs and blood vessels in the lungs.
Micheal Dermansky, a physiotherapist from Melbourne, said that it is here where physiotherapists may intervene.
He said that physiotherapists will be providing support for the patients to eventually cope up with their normal daily activities. Physiotherapists will be crucial in teaching patients to actively engage with the transition.
Mr. Dermansky added that the task is challenging as it would need breaking down the various tasks and adjusting them with the patient’s lung function.
Having a closer look upon the pacing will be necessary to maximise the current lung condition. He added that physiotherapists will be mindful about the program all throughout.
Exercise will be extremely important in the said rehabilitation. Despite having the tendency of experiencing chronic fatigue.
