It is well-documented that doctors in the public health system, particularly junior doctors, suffer from working long hours, but according to Avant Mutual Group, doctors in private practice are not immune from fatigue-related risks either.

Research has shown that fatigue in doctors can result in greater chance of errors and put a doctor at greater risk of needlestick injury and being involved in motor vehicle accidents. To help doctors determine whether they are at risk of fatigue, the AMA has developed an online fatigue assessment tool.

Doctors who use the assessment tool will receive an online assessment of the fatigue risks of their roster. Doctors who are assessed as being at risk are encouraged to raise this with hospital management.
