183042 - Clinical Practice Considerations for Managing Chronic Non-Cancer Pain with Medicinal Cannabis

  • : Online

During this course, GPs will review the clinical evidence of using medicinal cannabis in chronic pain management. The aim is to educate GPs about cannabis and the endocannabinoid system; help them understand the regulatory pathways to access medicinal cannabis and provide clinical practice and patient selection considerations for the use of medicinal cannabis in chronic pain

Relevance to General Practice

Australian GPs get constant inquiries from their patients about medicinal cannabis, but majority of GPs feel their knowledge is inadequate to discuss its access, safety, and effectiveness. There is clinical evidence supporting the use of medicinal cannabis in patients with chronic pain, among other conditions. With 1 in 5 Australians suffering from chronic pain, patient inquiries in primary care will continue to rise. Proper training and education around medicinal cannabis will enable GPs to talk to their patients and deter them from using illegal cannabis. It will also empower them to use evidence-based approach to treat patients using medicinal cannabis where standard of care therapies have failed.
