183064 - Clinical Practice Considerations for Improving Quality of Life for Palliative Care Patients Using Medicinal Cannabis

  • : Online

The usage of medicinal cannabis in palliative care settings, where the focus is on individual choice, patient autonomy, empowerment, comfort and especially quality of life, appears to be gaining ground. The aim of this course is to educate GPs on the use of medicinal cannabis in palliative care.

Relevance to General Practice

1000s of Australians are self-medicating with illegal cannabis to treat a range of serious conditions. Many GPs lack knowledge about how to help patients legally access medicinal cannabis and feel their knowledge is inadequate to discuss its access, safety, and effectiveness. Among the goals of palliative care described by the World Health Organisation are relief from pain and other distressing symptoms, and the enhancement of quality of life (QoL). Proper training and education around medicinal cannabis will enable GPs to talk to their patients and deter them from using illegal cannabis and empower them to use the evidence-based approach.
