183515 - Cognitive behavioural therapy skills for general practice

  • : Online

Cognitive behavioural therapy skills for general practice is an interactive online training course which provides GPs with foundational CBT skills to use in their general practice for the treatment of common mental health disorders. The training is ideal for GPs who have completed mental health skills training (MHST) and wish to include CBT in their clinical practice. Whilst the module is aimed at rural GPs, it will be a useful resource for any GP interested in gaining skills in psychotherapy.

Relevance to General Practice

GPs play an important role in the management of mental health, with the Bettering the Evaluation and Care of Health (BEACH) study finding that approximately 13% of GP encounters in 2013–4 were mental health-related. Non-drug therapies, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), are an important treatment option. However, most GPs, have not received training in psychotherapy, and refer their patients to psychiatrists, psychologists, or other allied mental health professionals for these services. Referral can be challenging or even impossible in rural and remote regions, due to poor distribution of the mental health workforce, and there are high levels of unmet mental health need in these areas. Providing GPs in rural areas with flexible, accessible training options will help them to upskill in this area in order to meet their communities’ needs. This online course will equip GPs with the skills to begin using CBT in their practices.
