Avant eLearning module: Gathering Diagnostic Information (Update)

  • : Online

The ability to connect with patients is a core skill for all doctors. Open and constructive interactions result in many benefits, including the ability to communicate essential diagnostic information.
An improved ability to understand and manage individuals through improved communication techniques will therefore lead to increased doctor satisfaction, improved treatment outcomes and reduced patient complaints.
Clinical reasoning and reviewing diagnostic errors will also assist the medical practitioner when gathering diagnostic information.
This course will outline the elements required to establish an accurate diagnosis. Gathering the information from both the patient and other sources to achieve the best outcomes for both doctor and patient.

Relevance to General Practice

The patient is one of the most important sources of information when gathering information prior to establishing a working diagnosis. The ability to delve beneath the superficial chatter and seek valuable information by building a rapport with the patient will significantly aid the decision making process, improve clinical care and patient outcomes.
Good doctor-patient communication results in improved patient satisfaction and also professional satisfaction amongst doctors. Moreover, it lowers the use of healthcare resources and improves health outcomes of patients. There is also strong evidence that, with appropriate training, effective communication skills can both be acquired and retained. In Australia, a recent pilot programme demonstrated the improvement in patient outcomes that can be achieved through educating GPs on communication skills and strategies.
