Introduction to Mental Health Problems in Australia
- : Online
In this webinar, we will explore the definition of mental health and what constitutes a mental illness. We will discuss the most common mental health illnesses in Australia today and the impact of mental illness on the patient, their family and friends, and the health system in general.
An issue that will also be investigated will be the importance of early intervention and the importance of all health care staff having an understanding of mental health first aid – to assist the client in a crisis and also who to refer the client to for ongoing support and management.
Remember 1 in 5 people in Australia will experience a mental health illness this year. That means that no matter where you practice Nursing you will at some time be working with a client/patient who has, or is experiencing, a mental health issue. You will need to be skilled enough to recognise this as well as support and assist them until you can refer them to a mental health specialist team member.
In this session you will:
- Gain an understanding of what a mental illness is
- Explore the most common mental health illnesses in Australia
- Investigate the impact of mental illness and the broader society
- Discover the importance of early intervention and the role that mental health first aid knowledge can have
