HIV PrEP prescribing in general practice

  • : Melbourne

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is the most effective bio-medical form of HIV prevention, and trials across Australia have shown a dramatic decrease in new HIV infection in those at risk of HIV. This module provides an overview of PrEP, and includes a patient case study to help GPs familiarise themselves with taking a sexual health history prescribing PrEP, and providing patient education.

By completing this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the HIV landscape in Australia including epidemiology and the importance of testing, treatment and prevention
  • Identify people at risk of contracting HIV
  • Feel comfortable in assessing a patient’s eligibility for PrEP based on behavioural and clinical criteria
  • Understand the efficacy and safety of PrEP in the prevention of HIV transmission
  • Know how to access tools and clinical guidelines for prescribing PrEP

This activity is sponsored by the Australasian Society for HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Sexual Health Medicine (ASHM).
