As part of her Doctorate, Marnee McKay, a physiotherapist, undertook the development of normative reference data for performance related outcome measures assessing joint range of movement, muscle strength, spatiotemporal and plantar pressure gait and functional capabilities- gross motor function, dexterity and balance.
This included an assessment of 1000 healthy male & female individuals between the ages of 3 to 101.

She used the following tests – 6 minute walk test; 30 second sit/stand; timed up & down stairs; long jump & vertical jump; motor planning; balance and dexterity.
This information allows Occupational Therapists to examine the effect intervention strategies have on the individuals occupational capacity by allowing comparisons with Australian based normative reference data.

SUITABLE FOR

Suitable for qualified clinicians

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By attending this webinar participants will gain a useful tool that will allow them to compare a person’s performance of physical function to normative data. This is particularly useful in the Medicolegal assessment arena which are usually a one off assessment.

  • Therapists will have a range of standard tools that can be used in determining physical function.
  • Therapists will be able to compare the persons responses to Australian based normative data matching by gender and age.

PRESENTER

DR. MARNEE MCKAY
PhD, MHlthSc (Sports Physio), BAppSc (Phty)

Marnee is an early career researcher and titled Sports Physiotherapist with 20 years of clinical experience managing acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries and disorders.
She is a Lecturer, Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy team leader and founder of the Early and Mid-Career Research Academic group in the Faculty of Health Sciences at The University of Sydney.
Through Dr McKay’s research expertise in assessing physical capabilities via outcome measure assessment, she is pioneering the development of whole-of-life functional scales, based on age- and sex-matched normative reference values from the 1000 Norms Project. During her PhD, Dr McKay generated the largest normative reference database of outcome measures across the lifespan.
These normative reference values are being used to develop responsive clinical outcome assessments (COAs) in accordance with the FDA for a range of neurological and musculoskeletal disorders such as spinal muscular atrophy (Columbia University, New York), inherited neuropathy (University of Rochester), metabolic disorders (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia) and infantile Gillian Barre Syndrome (Rotterdam, Netherlands).
Dr McKay now leads the 1000 Norms Project Consortium, which is an interdisciplinary group of 25 academics, clinicians and higher degree research students in Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and Hull (UK) governing the implementation of the >1M reference values.
Despite only receiving her PhD in 2017, she has already published 18 peer-reviewed scientific articles, including 2 back-to-back first author papers in the prestigious journal Neurology on the quantification of whole-body strength and function in 1000 healthy children and adults aged 3-101 years.
