100709 - Intra-uterine Device Insertion Course for General Practitioners

  • : Online

The course provides a theoretical and practical guide to intra-uterine contraceptive device insertion.
Presented by gynaecologists, it is targeted to general practitioners who wish to insert intra-uterine devices.
A thorough and interactive course combining theory and hands-on practical training.

Relevance to General Practice

Women of a female reproductive age most commonly present to their physician to discuss contraception and abnormal uterine bleeding. Advances in long acting reversible contraception mean that women can have both contraceptive and abnormal bleeding treated simultaneously within an outpatient setting.
This course addresses the needs identified by GPs themselves in order to fill the current gap in services offered for women with regards to insertion of intra-uterine devices. It has been designed in accordance with the requirements for GPs and has been designed with theory and practical elements, culminating in live training on insertion of IUDs.

Learning outcomes
  • Discuss skills and requirements necessary for intra-uterine device insertion including patient selection, requirements pre and post insertion and follow up care
  • Develop skills to insert intra-uterine devices on patients without supervision allowing independent practice in the community.
  • Develop strategies to deal with difficult insertions and how to overcome obstacles.
  • Apply counselling skills to patients regarding intra-uterine devices for long acting contraception.
  • Implement efficient referral pathways to improve patient care and safety
