The ALS - Core course provides essential skills ALS. The course combines online pre-learning with a one day skills / simulation workshop. The workshop features intensive small group training clinical simulation. 

Topics will include ALS and BLS, primary survey, introduction to pacing and cardioversion, Intravenous & Intraosseous access, advanced airway management, rhythm recognition, pharmacology and team roles. 

All material is consistent with recommended ARC guidelines. 
Simulation is a major feature of the program, facilitating transfer of medical knowledge and procedural skills to the clinical care of the critically ill adult and child.

Relevance to General Practice

Management of cardiac arrest is a critical skill for all health professionals. Regular updates are essential for maintaining the knowledge and practical skills required for CPR. The course uses the most recent Australian Resuscitation Council recommendations to review the approach to the patient with suspected cardiac arrest. 

The course provides detailed discussion of all aspects of both basic and advanced CPR in a GP and hospital setting. All material is consistent with recommended ARC guidelines.

Learning outcomes
  • Outline the clinical features of cardiac arrest.
  • Demonstrate the sequence of steps in initiating basic CPR – the DRABCD algorthim.
  • Demonstrate the protocols for managing the shockable and non-shockable arrest rhythms.
  • Review the dose and indications for emergency drugs used in managing cardiac arrest.
  • List and explain the rates/ratios for cardiac compression/ventilation in adults and children using the standardised approach of the ARC
