The aim of this seminar is to provide GPs and any health professional with evidence -based strategies and practically useful information - an evening that bring several high quality clinical together to focus and share their specialized experience in the management of diabetes. GPs and other primary health professionals are uniquely positioned to use this new knowledge for the benefit of their patients and society as a whole.

Relevance to General Practice

Approximately 1 million Australians have been diagnosed with diabetes. The prevalence of particularly type 2 diabetes, rises with age and is higher in men than in women. Diabetes is associated with a myriad of complications which affect the feet, eyes, kidneys, and cardiovascular health. Nerve damage in the lower limbs affects around 13% of Australians with diabetes, diabetic retinopathy occurs in over 15% of Australians with diabetes, and diabetes is now the leading cause of end-stage kidney disease. In people with diabetes, cardiovascular disease is the primary cause of death, with around 65% of all CVD deaths in Australia occurring inpeople with diabetes or pre-diabetes. Since those with diabetes have other areas of their health affected this seminar will be highly relevant to GPs as they are at the frontline of diagnosing and treating these condition.

  • Refresh and revise their clinical assessment and management strategies in diabetes management.
  • Help them to identify areas of their clinical practice that may be improved by the addition or improvement of systematic strategies to ensure better prevention
