102658 - Chronic hepatitis C in general practice Small group meeting

  • : Online

This small group meeting with a trained facilitator provides GPs with an update and an opportunity for interactive discussion with Peers about the diagnosis, assessment and management of patients with hepatitis C.

Relevance to General Practice

It is estimated that approximately 230,000 patients are infected with Hepatitis C. Until recently, only 1-2% of patients received treatment for hepatitis C each year, the prevalence of hepatitis C has continued to rise with the burden of liver disease due to hepatitis C expected to triple by 2030. Patient with hepatitis C are at risk for the development of liver cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and liver failure.

Direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy has seen a revolution in hepatitis C treatment. DAAs are highly effective and are well tolerated. From March 1st 2016, DAAs have been available via the PBS for GPs to prescribe. GPs are key to increasing access and uptake of hepatitis C treatment to achieve the goals of the Australian Government’s Fourth National Hepatitis C Strategy. This educational activity seeks to empower GPs to take on this expanded role. The education will be based around the national consensus guidelines.
