103367 - MSK Ultrasound

  • : Online

This five-day program is designed for all medical professional with an interest in musculoskeletal ultrasound techniques. The topics proved an overview of ultrasound pattern recognition in fat layer, tendons, muscles, ligaments, join and nerves in general. Particular emphasis is given to scanning protocols which convey high quality diagnosis in soft tissue pathologies. There is an emphasis on practical aspects led by expert sonographers and clinicians. Low student/tutor rate ensure reasonable hands-on ultrasound practice, which increases attendance’s confidence of providing safe and accurate musculosketal assessment. Practicing without time constrains to produce a report allows attendants to concentrate on their particular objectives. For practitioners who aim to be accredited by the Australian Society for Ultrasound in Medical Practice, this workshop covers the following Certificate of Clinical Performed Ultrasound units: physics, vascular access and basic soft tissue.

Relevance to General Practice

Ultrasound machine is an excellent tool to assess soft tissue, particularly musculoskeletal (MSK) structures such as skin, fat, joints, tendons, muscles, ligaments & other surrounding structures. Some common applications of MSK ultrasound for general practitioners comprise of evaluation of knee, shoulder, hip, ankle joints. Ultrasonographic imaging is becoming more widely available in rheumatology clinics and other ambulatory and emergency settings. Assessment of intra and extra-articular structures of the knee, ankle and shoulder through sonography provides useful clinical information. Additionally, the dynamic nature of ultrasound examination allows for detection of instability of both tendon and ligament, which may not be visualized on static imaging. Shoulder pain is a common complaint in the primary care setting. Studies indicate that up to 34 percent of the general population suffers from shoulder pain. A thorough understanding of the anatomy and pathophysiology assists treatment

Learning outcomes
  • Identify the parameters of safe application of ultrasound in medical diagnosis
  • Identify the physical principles, artefacts and the steps for image optimisation while performing ultrasound in general practice
  • Practice "hands on" ultrasound scanning skills required to maximise diagnostic ability in answering relevant clinical questions
  • Recognise the sonographic appearances of normal and abnormal structures required to answer common clinical questions
  • Perform Soft tissue (skin, bones, joints, tendons, enthesis, fascia, nerves, vessels and muscles) ultrasound
