The workshop will provide doctors with a greater understanding of this vital topic that will assist them in understanding the potential risks, safety and mental well-being of young people and the issues they face online.

Relevance to General Practice

Common problems such as cyber bullying and 'sexting' have received media attention in recent years but the actual psychosocial impacts on a young persons' wellbeing is complex and evolving, requiring in-depth understanding. Through the proposed workshop we aim to optimise communication and collaboration within the community and within general practice (RACGP, 2014).

  • Ability to identify the main types of social media and how they are used among young people.
  • Outline various positive and negative impacts of social media in relation to adolescent wellbeing.
  • Improved ability to recognise common signs of cyber-bullying in young patients.
