103635 - Paediatric Ultrasound

  • : Online

This five-day program is focused on ruling out high risk diagnoses applying point of care ultrasound. The aim of this workshop is for registrants to gain scanning skills sufficient to make clinical decisions, to recognise the strengths and limitations of point-of-care ultrasound, and to know how to integrate basic ultrasound into clinical decision-making in the most common illnesses presenting at paediatric emergency departments. For practitioners who aim to be accredited by the Australian Society for Ultrasound in Medical Practice (ASUM), this workshop covers the following Certificate of Clinical Performed Ultrasound (CCPU) units: physics, renal, lung, pleural effusion, extended focused abdominal scan for trauma (E-FAST), vascular access and basic echocardiography in life support (BELS).

Relevance to General Practice

Portable ultrasound machine has being widely applied by clinicians in critically ill paediatric population. Sonographic assessment is mainly used in general practice, the emergency department and the intensive care unit to assess four separate body segments: thoracic (lung and pleural), abdominopelvic, vascular, and cardiac (basic and advanced). There are several protocols utilized to evaluate critically-ill patients including rapid ultrasound in shock (RUSH), abdominal and cardiac evaluation with sonography in shock (ACES), focused assessment with sonography for trauma (FAST), extended focused assessment with sonography for trauma (E-FAST), basic echocardiography in life support (BELS) and focused cardiac ultrasound (FOCUS). These protocols can be learnt in block or in modules and are scope of practice for general clinicians, emergency and critical care physicians worldwide. The aim of this course is to teach evidence-based ultrasound protocols focused on paediatric population.

Learning outcomes
  • Identify the parameters of safe application of ultrasound in medical diagnosis
  • Identify the physical principles, artefacts and the steps for image optimisation while performing ultrasound in general practice
  • Practice "hands on" ultrasound scanning skills required to maximise diagnostic ability in answering relevant clinical questions
  • Recognise the sonographic appearances of normal and abnormal structures required to answer common clinical questions
  • Perform E-FAST, Renal & Biliary Tract, Soft Tissue, Vessels & Guided Needling, Lung and Basic Cardiac ultrasounds
