104093 - Breast Ultrasound Techniques

  • : Online

This program is suitable for sonographers, mammographers, clinicians and radiologists who are interested in learn and/or consolidate skills in breast sonography. The integrated approach begins with an upbeat look at the basics of ultrasound physics including artefact recognition and progress with in depth discussion on echo pattern recognition in normal and abnormal breast examination. All tuition is undertaken in a highly personalised, tailored fashion with intensive "hands-on" practical sessions allowing registrants to gain skills in the most cost effective manner. For practitioners who aim to be accredited by the Australian Society for Ultrasound in Medical Practice (ASUM), this workshop covers the following Certificate of Clinical Performed Ultrasound (CCPU) units: physics and breast.

Relevance to General Practice

Breast cancer is the leading cause of malign cancer among women in Australia, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. To address this issue, having screening guideline is paramount to guaranty early diagnosis and treatment for those who attendant to general practice with breast pain and abnormalities such as breast changes, nipple discharge and breast lumps. Ultrasound is a valuable imaging tool for assessing breast tissue. Currently, elastography and strain shear-wave have been used to image breast tissue; and its usage is expected to increase in general practice, particularly with the widespread of ultrasound breast screening. To reinforce the relevance of breast ultrasound techniques, US elastography findings of breast masses have been integrated into the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) US lexicon as an associated parameter for breast abnormalities. The aim of this program is to introduce breast ultrasound techniques for clinicians who evaluate masses.
