109983 - Mastering Allergy and Asthma

  • : Online

The aim of this educational meeting is to present the latest research in the diagnosis, management and treatment options for asthma, allergies and other related conditions (such as non-allergic upper respiratory disease, anaphylaxis and thunderstorm asthma) in children and adult patients.

Relevance to General Practice

There is a current need in Australia and internationally, to upskill General Practitioners (GPs) in the diagnosis, management and treatment of asthma, allergic rhinitis and associated conditions such as food allergies, anaphylaxis and thunderstorm asthma. At the forefront of patient care, GPs are in a unique position to not only influence but lead change in primary health care provision, and optimise patient outcomes. This ALM will cover all the above topics and aims to equip GPs with the knowledge and skills in diagnosis, management and the early identification of high risk patients with asthma, allergies and associated conditions.

Learning outcomes

  • Identify the most common causes of anaphylaxis and co-factors that determine severity of food anaphylaxis, to assess and manage risk in patients.
  • Evaluate and differentiate between the allergic and non-allergic features of upper airways disease.
  • Develop a comprehensive management plan for school-aged children with asthma and/or rhinitis, incorporating treatment and prevention of flare-up.
  • Review the theories underpinning the relationship between thunderstorms and asthma exacerbation to develop comprehensive prevention and management plans.
  • Identify the criteria for the effective referral of patients with asthma, rhinitis and/or allergies to a specialist while ensuring continuity of patient care.
