110435 - Intravenous Cannulation Workshop

  • : Online

In this workshop, we expose candidates and familiarise them with the different types of cannulas available in the Australian health systems. We also show them the correct techniques in administering an IV cannula and the different components involved in securing a cannula.

Relevance to General Practice

Despite the abundance of procedural teaching opportunities in medical and general practice training, medical students graduate with limited experience in basic and emergency procedures and general practitioners often complete training programs lacking confidence in a range of procedural skills .

This activity learning module is a practical hands-on workshop presented in a relaxed and encouraging environment. The activity is delivered through demonstration and provides participants with ample opportunity to practice their skills and enhance their knowledge such that they can perform intravenous cannulation confidently in the medical setting.

Learning outcomes
  • Identify peripheral blood vessels and the related anatomy required to perform intravenous cannulation.
  • Confidently select the appropriate cannula size.
  • Safely and efficiently perform intravenous cannulation.
  • Recognise complications associated with cannulation and manage effectively.
  • Execute aseptic technique related to intravenous cannulation.
