110575 - Anaphylaxis and allergy: are you prepared?

  • : Online

This online module is designed to raise awareness of the topic of anaphylaxis and to upskill GPs in how to manage it. The module will cover the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis, better ways of identifying patients at risk of anaphylaxis and the management priorities relevant to GPs.

Relevance to General Practice

Healthcare professionals need to feel confident enough to identify and manage a case of anaphylaxis. Patient education is a vital aspect of a GP’s role in treating anaphylaxis, and it is important that healthcare professionals can pass on their knowledge to the public. Anaphylaxis can occur anywhere, anytime, so if members of the public are educated on this topic and feel confident enough to administer treatment to someone experiencing an anaphylactic episode, it could lead to a worldwide reduction in morbidity caused by anaphylaxis.

Learning outcomes
  • Outline the optimal management strategy of anaphylaxis in line with the ASCIA guidelines
  • List the potential triggers for anaphylaxis and advise individuals on how to reduce their exposure to them
  • Recognise patients who are at higher risk of anaphylaxis by assessing their social and medical history
  • Clarify the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and know how they differ from the symptoms of allergic reactions
