This educational presentation provides an overview of diagnosis and management of common paediatric ENT problems, including tonsillitis, obstructive sleep apnoea, and rhinosinusitis.

Relevance to General Practice

Paediatric ear nose and throat conditions, including acute and chronic sinusitis, obstructive sleep apnoea, and tonsillitis, are common presentations in general practice. As such, they are key areas for GPs to keep up to date with diagnosis and treatment.

It is one of the most common primary care presentations in Australia, and 1.4 in every 100 general practice encounters were for acute or chronic sinusitis. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a common paediatric condition and remains the most common cause of sleep-disordered breathing in children. A sore throat is a common symptom that frequently results in a medical consultation and unnecessary prescription of antibiotics.
