This course aims to discuss the importance of good communication in medicine and focuses on the role communication plays in the consent process. Each activity is built into a framework where one activity must be successfully completed before the next activity is open for access. The GP may stop and start an activity at any time and come back to the point where they left off.

Relevance to General Practice

Learning to become an effective communicator does not always come naturally to practitioners or their staff. It is not always an easy task particularly within the challenging and demanding environment of a busy general practice. Poor communication however, is seen as a contributor to adverse events and has been a significant reason for patients to complain about their care. An improved ability to understand and manage individuals through improved communication techniques will therefore lead to increased doctor satisfaction, improved treatment outcomes and reduced patient complaints.

Learning outcomes
  • Develop a comprehensive management plans for patients with a variety of challenging behaviours.
  • Undertake a comprehensive consent discussion with an awareness of the legal and ethical requirements.
  • Identify when it is necessary to terminate a patient relationship and how to manage the process with a patient safety focus.
  • Integrate advanced communication skills into consultations to improve patient relationships.
