113455 - NOACs Clinical Brief Series

  • : Online

A four-part newsletter series on coagulation and management of patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) in general practice, with an emphasis on initiating a conversation with AF patients about anticoagulation. 4 issues x 15 minutes per issue

Relevance to General Practice

Anticoagulation is an effective means of preventing the majority of ischaemic strokes in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). The first of this 4-part series examining oral anticoagulation in NVAF, explores the rationale for urgency in anticoagulation and the important role played by the GP. The availability of non-vitamin K antagonist anticoagulants (NOACs) offers an alternative to warfarin for stroke risk reduction in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). Part 2 examins oral anticoagulation in NVAF, evaluates the efficacy and safety of the NOACs. Part 3 examins oral anticoagulation in NVAF, explores the GP’s role in optimising medication compliance and adherence. The importance of engaging patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) in discussion about their stroke risk management cannot be over emphasised. Part 4 examins oral anticoagulation in NVAF, uses a case study to explore important issues around OAC optimisation.

Learning outcomes
  • Describe the evidence on stroke prevention with non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) and proactively engage patients with non-valvular atrial
  • Interpret the real world safety evidence for the NOACs as it pertains to patient populations
  • Assess the impact of patient concerns regarding bleeding in management of AF, and the role of NOAC reversing agents in emergencies
  • Engage in shared decision-making that aims to improve adherence to oral anticoagulation therapy, and thereby optimising patient outcomes
