In this module, delegates will hear from academics, medical practitioners, industry representatives, and opinion leaders with unique insights and views on the priorities for tackling obesity in Australia. Topical, insightful, and sometimes controversial questions generate discussion and identify the measures the AMA should focus on in its efforts to advocate for action on obesity.

Relevance to General Practice

Tackling obesity in Australia is a national and economic priority, and the response to it must be commensurate with the breadth of its prevalence, the speed of its growth, and the impacts on individuals and society. 

Combating obesity requires a coordinated and strategic whole-of-society approach. This will include significant roles for governments, non-government and community organisations, the health and food industries, the media, employers, schools, parents and many others. 

Many factors have an influence over obesity, this is why a range of interventions, policies and actions are championed by various health experts and stakeholders to reduce obesity and overweight

Learning outcomes
  • Recognise and apply seminal and recent research in the treatment of overweight and obesity
  • Identify at least three ways policies, environments, and/or systems can be changed at the community-level or higher to reduce or prevent obesity
  • Recognise the issues affecting policy developed and implementation and understanding what individual practitioners can do to improve the health of Australian’s
