116795 - Metabolism and Weight Management

  • : Online

Metabolism and Weight Management is a webcast that is part of The National Obesity Forum addressing the prevalent epidemic of obesity in Australia.
It is a 2 hour, succinct webcast covering psychotropics and weight gain, pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes and weight management, lifestyle strategies and liver disease.
Being a webcast means it will be available to health professionals interstate and in remote areas. After watching, the audience will be required to answer some MCQs to verify their understanding of what they have watched. Only those that have answered these MCQs will be awarded their CPD points.

Relevance to General Practice

Obesity is highly relevant to both general practice and the community as excess weight, especially obesity, is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, some musculoskeletal conditions and some cancers (1). Obesity is the second highest contributor to burden of disease and further to this in 2014-15, 63.4% of Australian adults were overweight or obese which is an increase since 1995 (56.3%) and even more worrying is that around 27.4% of children aged 5 -17 years old were overweight or obese (2). A pilot study led by Dr Liz Sturgiss from the ANU Medical school found that GPs were well placed on the health frontline to help patients manage their weight, but they did not have the confidence to do so effectively (3). 1.
