117628 - AFP Clinical Challenge December 2017: Common problems in school-aged children

  • : Online

To provide guidance for the general practitioner in the management of conditions that commonly affect school-aged children

Relevance to General Practice

The December issue of AFP highlights the management of conditions that commonly affect school-aged children. These conditions include acne, eczema, constipation, growth abnormalities and depression. Eczema affects about 30% of children in Australia, but is often poorly managed. Acne usually presents around the time of puberty and affects more than 90% of adolescents. Constipation occurs in 3–30% of young children4 and often causes distress. In addition to being a serious condition, depression in childhood can have affect development and have long-term consequences if not recognised and treated appropriately. Finally, there is wide variation in growth patterns and it is important to differentiate between deviations that fall within normal limits and those requiring investigation for possible growth disturbances. The articles in this issue of AFP provide guidance for GPs in diagnosing and managing these problems to ensure optimal healthcare for children during their school years.
