To provide guidance for the general practitioner in the management of patients with multiple chronic diseases

Relevance to General Practice

The January–February 2018 issue of AJGP highlights the management of patients with multiple chronic diseases (multimorbidity). About 50% of general practice encounters are with patients who have two or more chronic conditions.1 Multimorbidity reduces quality of life while increasing the need for healthcare services and the risk of mortality.2–4 However, the current system of healthcare focuses on single diseases and uncertainty remains as to how best to manage patients with multiple conditions. This is particularly challenging for GPs, as there are few guidelines that specifically address the management of multimorbidity. The articles in this edition of AJGP are aimed at providing some guidance for GPs around the care of patients with multimorbidity.
