This How to Treat will discuss the pathophysiology, epidemiology and classification of cataracts. Understanding these factors provide a basis for the practical assessment of both the patients’ visual and systemic health which is of considerable importance for the GP. Current surgical techniques, innovation and the potential role of GPs in the care of the patient will further be discussed. However, the GP as primary carer retains a pivotal role in the detection, perioperative assessment and counselling of the cataract patient.
