123329 - One day BELS

  • : Online

This One Day BELS course has been designed to provide the beginner in transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) with the practical skills to acquire the correct images, whilst understanding the limitations and pitfalls. It is suits for rural remote physicians, general practitioners, point of care physicians and other physicians who aim to learn about echocardiography in life support. The emphasis of the course is on the practical aspects of echocardiography with comprehensive “hands-on” tuition led by expert sonographers and clinicians.

Relevance to General Practice

Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is a real-time non-invasive imaging modality for quantitative and qualitative evaluation of cardiac anatomy and function. Transthoracic echocardiography provides tomographic imaging through four main cardiac windows. Extensive echocardiographic examination mainly comprises of imaging the heart from multiple orientation planes. Basic echocardiography in life support (BELS), rapid cardiac ultrasound (RCE), focused cardiac ultrasound (FOCUS) and rapid ultrasound in shock (RUSH) are examples of cardiac protocol suggested to assessment critically ill patients presenting with unknown shock. A thorough assessment and fluid resuscitation is paramount in patients with reversible shock. Basic cardiac ultrasound training provides to general practitioners, emergency medicine and critical care physicians the knowhow to perform hemodynamic measurements and diagnosis of the most common causes of cardiogenic shock.

Learning outcomes
  • Identify the parameters of safe application of ultrasound in medical diagnosis;
  • Identify the physical principles, artefacts and the steps for image optimisation while performing ultrasound;
  • Recognise the sonographic appearances of normal and abnormal structures required to answer common clinical questions;
  • Practice "hands on" ultrasound scanning skills required to maximise diagnostic ability in answering relevant clinical questions;
  • Perform cardiac ultrasound related to basic life support.
