Obesity is a chronic disease that continues to increase in prevalence in Australia and across the world. Almost two thirds of adults Australians are over-weight or obese, and this figure is predicted to rise to 80% by 2025. Although obesity is largely a systemic problem, with roots in politics, economics,
society etc, primary care is an important avenue to treat obesity. However,
GPs do not commonly report monitoring and discussing weight gain with
their patients and Australian research shows that many GPs lack the confi-dence to talk wi th their patients about overweight and obesity. Despite these
challenges, there are practical ways in which GPs can help their patients
manage weight loss in primary care. In this article, two leading public health experts draw on their long term experiences to
suggest 10 practical recommendations for managing weight loss in primary
care, taking into account a patient's individual and environmental circum-stances.
