Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a specific form of interstitial lung disease resulting in fibrosis of the lung parenchyma, progressive lung restriction, breathlessness and, ultimately, death. The diagnosis can be challenging as the presentation is often non-specific with cough, fatigue and increased breathlessness. Early referral to a specialised interstitial lung disease centre is therefore recommended for accurate diagnosis. It is important to consider a diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis early because treatments have recently become available that can slow the progression of the disease
