Patients presenting with symptoms that might be attributable to underlying lung disease are common in primary care practice. The majority of conditions are self- limiting and benign. In most cases a focused history and examination can provide reassurance that whatever is causing the symptoms will settle without intervention or investigation. While reassurance, education, and advice to return for further review if symptoms are not improving is often all that is required, it is nonetheless important to remember that even acute respiratory presentations can be flare ups or exacerbations of underlying chronic lung disease.
