Relevance to General Practice

To achieve optimal outcomes in a patient with heart failure, management should include patient education, and drug therapy for the primary disease as well as management of symptoms and comorbidities. It is important that the general practitioner actively manages patients with heart failure, with specialist, nursing and allied health input as required. This activity provides an overview of the diagnosis and classification of heart failure, and of management according to current heart failure guidelines.
