130720 - Pertussis: Your role in identification

  • : Online

A 30-minute online activity to review the clinical course and diagnosis of pertussis, its impact in Australia and the need raise awareness of the importance of vaccination, respiratory hygiene and early diagnosis.

Relevance to General Practice

Pertussis is the least well controlled vaccine-preventable disease in Australia with regular outbreaks. GPs routinely see people for respiratory illnesses, so are ideally placed to test individuals with a history of persistent cough to diagnose pertussis and educate people about respiratory hygiene around vulnerable populations. Early diagnosis and treatment helps limit the spread of infection to the community, reduce disease burden in all age groups and vulnerable populations in particular.
