Gestational diabetes in pregnancy confers increased risks for mother and infant. These risks include increased rates of pre-eclampsia, induction of labour and caesarean section. In the infant, risks include premature delivery, macrosomia, jaundice, hypoglycaemia and respiratory distress syndrome, among others. Women diagnosed with GDM have an elevated risk of recurrent GDM and progression to type 2 diabetes.
