132901 - Foundations of Nutritional & Environmental Medicine - Part 1 (e-learning)

  • : Online

Introduce General Practitioners to the evidence-based foundation principles of nutritional and environmental medicine, as they relate to human health and disease states. Lectures will focus on nutritional biochemistry, key nutrients, common nutritional deficiencies that may be associated with specific diseases, and the role diet may have in the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions.

Relevance to General Practice

Chronic diseases are the leading cause of illness, disability and death in Australia, accounting for 90% of all deaths in 2011.

A key focus of the Australian health system therefore is the prevention and better management of chronic disease to improve health outcomes. Many common chronic diseases are amenable to preventive measures such as changes in behaviour, including dietary and environmental exposures. These changes are important in improving chronic disease health outcomes. If left unchecked, trends in chronic disease risk factors will lead to increasing numbers of people living with chronic diseases.
The aim of this training is to support the critical need to integrate evidence-based nutritional and environmental medicine into routine medical care to achieve improved patient health outcomes.

Learning outcomes
  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of nutritional deficiencies and imbalances, and the role of environmental aspects, in common and lifestyle-related conditions.
  • Review the foundations of nutritional biochemistry, and describe the role of micro and macro nutrients, with particular attention to vitamin C and antioxidants.
  • Demonstrate how to take a comprehensive dietary history and identify high and low stress foods.
  • Identify the different types of pathology testing and other investigations to assess for gastrointestinal health.
