Cat 2 program for 2 hours looking at Optimising Osteoporosis Management and Facilitating Medication AdherenceRelevance to General Practice
Osteoporosis is a disease which is characterised both by low bone mineral density (BMD) and a breakdown of bone tissue. Individuals with an osteoporotic fracture have a two-to-four times increased risk of developing further fractures and approximately a two-to-three times increased risk of premature death.
Osteoporosis Australia reported that in 2012 approximately 4.74 million Australians over the age of 50 years had poor bone health, including more than one million people with osteoporosis (OP). Due to the prevalence of OP, GPs are at the frontline of diagnosis and ongoing management. Timely diagnosis and optimal management of OP has been shown to prevent subsequent fractures by up to 20%, 50% and 70% in people with non-vertebral, hip and vertebral fractures respectively.
