133536 - Neurology Update- Migraine, Nerve conduction studies, and Neurogenetics

  • : Online

This online presentation provides an update from neurologists for GPs on the clinical presentations, diagnosis, referral triggers, and treatment options for conditions including migraine, hereditary spastic paraplegia, spinocerebellar ataxia, and hereditory Parkinson’s disease, as well as an overview of the use of nerve conduction studies.

Relevance to General Practice

Neurological presentations in general practice can be as common as headache, which remains the most common cause of neurological consultation, to migraine, for which true prevalence according to international classifications is about 5% through to rare neurological movement disorders, which, whilst not commonly seen in general practice, are important to be differentiated from more common conditions. As such, it is important for the GP to be able to recognise conditions and symptomology that may require further investigation in collaboration with a neurologist.

Learning outcomes

  • List two conditions for which nerve conduction studies may be a useful diagnostic and monitoring tool
  • Describe a systematic approach to identification of neurological conditions requiring referral to a neurologist.
