133654 - Environmental Health (e-learning module)

  • : Online

The ACNEM Environmental Health ALM is designed to educate doctors and other professional health care practitioners in the recognition of environmental toxins, their effect on human health, and how affected patients may present to you in clinical practice. This learning module will provide an overview of major environmental toxins, including endocrine-disrupting chemicals, moulds and heavy metals. Experts in the field will educate in identifying patient signs and symptoms of exposure, and specific treatment strategies to improve health outcomes.

Relevance to General Practice

The World Health Organization and the Australian Department of Environment recognize that environmental toxins have significant negative impacts on human health. Asthma and respiratory conditions, cancer, fatigue and infertility have been positively linked to the effects of environmental toxins, which include mould, pesticides and heavy metals. With this nderstanding of the large contribution to the burden of worldwide disease, it is essential that medical doctors are educated in the links between environmental toxins and human health, and provided with treatment options to assist their patients.

Learning outcomes
  • Identify the types of environmental factors that can negatively impact human health.
  • Discuss the potential impacts of environmental pollutants and toxicants on short and long-term health outcomes.
  • Be able to inform patients on ways they can minimise exposure to environmental toxins.
  • Recall specific environmental contaminants that impact the 'sensitive' patient, and define the concept of 'sensitivity threshold'
  • Develop a directory of services that support patients with environmentally-related health concerns.
