This workshop is designed to improve the management of the critically ill patient in the rural setting, focusing on airway, breathing, circulation and teamwork skills in a series of inter professional workshops, skill stations and scenarios. The workshop is targeting GPs, Registered nurses and paramedics.

Relevance to General Practice

The overarching aim is to improve patient care and safety by enhancing professional development, knowledge and skills of non-specialist doctors working in rural NSW Hospitals. This program meets the criteria of the Hospital Skills Program. 

Learning outcomes
  • Demonstrate inter-professional teamwork including effective leadership and active team membership in emergency situations, to enable effective service delivery
  • Understand the role, skill set and scope of practice of rural practitioners to enable appropriate role delegation within rural centers with limited resources
  • Demonstrate a structured approach to airway management techniques (A,B,C, D) to maintain patient oxygenation
  • Recognise the signs and manage the care of the deteriorating patient due to sepsis or trauma
  • Communicate more effectively with retrieval teams for better patient care
