Relevance to General Practice

About 63% of the Australian population are overweight or obese and the prevalence is increasing. Almost a third of patients presenting in general practice are obese and two thirds are overweight or obese. However, our detection of obese individuals may be lower than desirable based on current screening policies. Behavioural interventions in primary care have been demonstrated to achieve a 5-7% improvement in weight and other risk factors. Therefore an opportunity exists to promote screening and target interventions. This ALM provides a framework for lobesity screening and covers the impact of local environmental factors, pathophysiology and obesity associated risks. This informs behavioural intervention strategies and incorporates a treatment plan based on risk stratification of BMI / obesity comorbidities as recommended by the obesity management guidelines.

Learning outcomes
  • Identify effective obesity screening and recognise obesity associated stigma in my practice
  • Understand local obesity prevalence in NSW primary health network and the obesogenic environment
  • Describe the pathophysiology of obesity, including the weight set-point theory
  • Apply stages of change theory & motivational interviewing as a basis for promoting behavioural change
  • Risk stratify management of obesity based on the Australian obesity management guidelines 2016*
