About 63% of the Australian population are overweight or obese and the prevalence is increasing. Almost a third of patients presenting in general practice are obese and two thirds are overweight or obese. However, our detection of obese individuals may be lower than desirable based on current screening policies. Behavioural interventions in primary care have been demonstrated to achieve a 5-7% improvement in weight and other risk factors. Therefore an opportunity exists to promote screening and target interventions. This ALM provides a framework for lobesity screening and covers the impact of local environmental factors, pathophysiology and obesity associated risks. This informs behavioural intervention strategies and incorporates a treatment plan based on risk stratification of BMI / obesity comorbidities as recommended by the obesity management guidelines.Learning outcomes
