137962 - Online Immunisation Update

  • : Online

The Online Immunisation Update has been designed for health professionals to enhance current immunisation practice and covers the legal aspects of immunisation, consent, immunisation programs, cold chain management and vaccine administration.

Relevance to General Practice

The Immunise Australia Program funds the purchase of vaccinations to protect millions of Australians from vaccine-preventable diseases each year. To ensure patients’ safety in vaccinating against these vaccine preventable diseases, there are a number of best practice principles that as immunisation service providers, GPs are recommended to follow. This includes performing a comprehensive pre-vaccination health screen, discussing the risks and benefits of vaccination, following adverse event reporting protocols, maintaining cold chain and recording of immunisation encounters. The National Immunisation Program lists the funded vaccines for all Australian residents. There may be other vaccines that are not funded but are recommended in the Australian Immunisation Handbook. It is crucial GPs keep up to date with program and schedule changes to the National and Western Australian Immunisation schedule as well as the latest recommendations for specific target groups that may be at risk.
