This session will cover differentiating causes of back pain such as: 
- Osteoarthritis 
- Inflammatory arthritis'- Mechanical back pain 
- Malignancy 
- Infection 
- Disc herniation/rupture 

The session will also cover red and yellow flags in back pain, examination techniques and acute after hours management of lumbar back pain.

Relevance to General Practice

General practitioners (GPs) are responsible for the primary care of Australians of all ages and it is important 
that GPs maintain their skills and knowledge ofmusculoskeletal conditions, which are commonly encountered.

  • Understand the epidemiology of back pain
  • Understand the anatomy and pathophysiology of back pain
  • Recognise the most common causes of back pain
  • Develop strategies to ensure appropriate patient history is taken and neurological examination techniques are utilised to make a correct diagnosis
