Relevance to General Practice

Polymyalgia rheumatica is one of the most common diseases that will present in rheumatology practice with inflammatory symptoms, and it is likely that most general practitioners will diagnose and care for many patients with PMR. Giant cell arteritis is the most common form of medium and large vessel vasculitis encountered in general practice. 
PMR and GCA are related conditions with overlapping symptoms and it is appropriate to consider matters of diagnosis and therapy contemporaneously.

Learning outcomes
  • On completion of this activity, the participant will be able to describe the presenting features of polymyalgia rheumatica and giant cell arteritis.
  • On completion of this activity, the participant will be able to discuss the differential diagnosis of polymyalgia rheumatica.
