140250 - AJGP Clinical Challenge September 2018: Neurology

  • : Online

This issue of AJGP focuses on neurological conditions, to assist GPs in being better able to recognise symptoms and provide timely management for patients, to ensure optimal care and health outcomes.

Relevance to General Practice

Neurological presentations accounted for 4.3% of general practice consultations in Australia in 2013–14. GP involvement in the management of neurological diseases can range from recognition of symptoms and diagnosis of common conditions, to referral and long-term care for more complex conditions such as motor neurone disease (MND). With an ageing population, the incidence of dementia is on the rise; this condition now affects 74% of patients aged over 75 years. There were 298,000 Australians with dementia in 2011, and approximately 0.5% of GP consultations involved the management of this disease. Dementia was the third leading cause of death in 2010, and it is estimated that the number of patients with dementia will reach 400,000 by 2020. GPs are well placed to initiate early management of these conditions and therefore, education in recognition of symptoms and timely diagnosis and management are essential, to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with these conditions.
