General practice eye consultations account for about 2.2 out of every 100 consultations. They range in nature from minor problems to vision-threatening emergencies. Eye problems are the fifth most common reason for medical specialist referral in Australia, making up 7.3% of such referrals. Identification and appropriate management of acute eye injuries and infection and of acute and progressive visual loss are essential skills for general practitioners.
A survey examining the frequency and predictors of unawareness of diabetic retinopathy and AMD, and found that 73% of individuals with diabetic retinopathy and 84% of individuals with AMD were unaware of their condition, suggesting that unawareness of these conditions should be a major public health concern and that efforts are needed to increase the frequency of eye exams among those at risk for these conditions.
General practitioners have a pivotal role in the screening and management of eye disease.
