Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, with approximately 300,000 persons in Australians with glaucoma, and an estimate that 50% of people with glaucoma in Australia are undiagnosed. Glaucoma can cause blindness if it is left untreated.
Therefore, early detection is crucial as glaucoma treatment can save remaining vision. Intraocular pressure (IOP) is one of the most important risk factors for the development and progression of glaucoma, and one of the few risk factors that are treatable. However, intervention is sometimes associated with significant side effects. Therefore, it is critical to appropriately target candidates for intervention.
