Relevance to General Practice

General practice eye consultations account for about 2.2 out of every 100 consultations. They range in nature from minor problems to vision-threatening emergencies. Eye problems are the fifth most common reason for medical specialist referral in Australia, making up 7.3% of such referrals.
Blephritis and dry eye are multifactorial diseases for which diagnosis and management are commonly the domain of the GP. Identification and appropriate management are thus essential skills for general practitioners.
